Following Gorilla Glass on
Facebook, you may have seen pictures and events focussed around The Gorilla Gallery.
The Gorilla Gallery, a concept of Gorilla Glass founder and jewelry designer Jason Pfohl, is an art gallery based in Oaxaca, Mexico with a focus on glass and ceramic artists working in Mexico.
Jason wanted to create an independent art space that would allow for interdisciplinary collaborations and exhibitions. It is an inclusive space inviting sculptors, graphic artists, street artists, photographers, and body modification artists to experiment with glass and ceramics.
“The glass and ceramics are not a destination but a departure point for the artwork.” says Pfohl.
The Gorilla Gallery has had the opportunity to work with many younger, emerging artists in Oaxaca. Using the Gorilla Glass production facility and print shop, young artists have been introduced to a new medium.
“It has allowed street and body modification artists to show artwork within a gallery setting, giving them access to a different public. The result has been an experimental and avantgarde art space that is willing to take risks and recognize new artistic disciplines.
For established glass and ceramic artists living in Mexico, it has given them a space to show their art work with installation and more conceptual pieces.” he explains.
Pfohl hopes the Gorilla Gallery will also become a destination for visiting international artists to help develop a cultural exchange of ideas and techniques.
One of the goals of the Gorilla Gallery is to invite body modification and suspension artists to show and perform their artwork in a serious gallery setting. At the grand opening in 2012 there was a suspension performance by Jussi Paradise and Lucky Hell (with rigging by Jimmy Buddha of Diablo Organics).
Currently there is a print making collaboration between twenty international scarification artists and the the Gorilla Glass vitriography print shop. The prints will be on display at the APP in Las Vegas and again at the Gorilla Gallery for Day of the Dead. There will be an upcoming suspension and bondage performance by Samar and Midori.
The exhibits change every two months with smaller events featuring street artists painting on glass being showcased monthly.
The gallery is open on Thursdays from 2:00 until 8:00.
It is located at
213 Crestop, entre Morelos y Matamoros
Oaxaca, Oaxaca
We’re going to start something new this season!
Gorilla Glass Feature Studio!
We want to showcase our favourite studios around the globe and we want to feature YOURS!
Glass body jewelry is so versatile, safe and colourful - it has so many uses in a piercing studio from non-conductive retainers for safe MRI procedures, to inert and appropriately sized tunnels for heavy gauge procedures to high class hanging designs in a full colour spectrum - every studio displays it uniquely and uses it for different reasons.
We want to show the world!
This time, we would like to introduce Pinz and Needlez Tattoo Studio in Edgewood, Maryland.
Their piercer, Dan Steinbacher, has been piercing four years and has carried Gorilla Glass for the majority of his professional career
Pinz and Needlez have a great presence on Facebook and offer Gorilla Glass to their clients, saying
“We honestly believe that [Gorilla Glass] is the best and most consistent glass jewelry company operating.”
The studio has success moving Power Plugs and Super Spirals. They use retainers in place of steel or titanium for certain piercings for clients who have special requirements and note that the Colour Front plugs are always a hit.
Setting their standards high (meeting APP standards), Pinz and Needlez Tattoo Studio is here for the discerning consumer that wants great work with great materials in a safe environment. Gorilla Glass is proud to be displayed in their studio!
